3 Week Blitz Day Two

by Mckenna on April 30, 2008

Yup I was sore. But I’m on a mission and now that I’m committed I can’t really quit on day 2 can I! Yesterday I was also in the garden for about 40 mins, hoeing and chopping up weeds and things like that so it was rather physical. This morning I had to take the garbage out – and the recycling bin so that was two trips up the really steep driveway. Just one of those lovely bonuses!

I didn’t get enough sleep last night. Elliot and I had great ambitions to get up well before the crack of dawn – like 5.30am and have a workout. Ha! I think it was 6.15 as usual when I finally rolled out to make breakfast. Its really important to have enough sleep. But somehow its the hardest thing to control when you’re on a mission like this. Eating is easy enough and working out is manageable too but getting to bed before 11 or even 10 when you have to get up at six is nearly impossible. I need my eight hours just like a car needs fuel. At least!

So breakfast this morning was another smoothie. They’re quick and easy and oh so yum! The ingredients in today’s one are as follows: banana, strawberries, pear, and some frozen ’smoothie mix’ which I think consists of some pineapple, banana, papaya, etc. When I make the smoothies, I just chuck everything into the blender and whiz it up. If there isn’t enough in it I just add some more fruit. Last week I bought a big box of yellow Kiwi that were on special because they were going off and that has been great. It was a dollar for about 3 kilos of the stuff and they are a perfect consistency for smoothies. Just be sure to peel Kiwi’s because the fluffy skin is the last thing you want in your smoothie!

Laziness often gets the better of me and as it was a rainy morning I just put the kettle on and made a cup of (instant) coffee and curled up with a book. Not good I know but sometimes its nice to take the time to enjoy stuff like that… I felt guilty so upon finishing the book I went and did Tuesday’s workout – thanks to Mike Mahler’s beginner kettlebell routine! The kettlebells felt SO heavy today. But because of you I kept going.

I should probably say that the first exercise requires 6 reps. I can’t do that just yet! I just cant! So I do 4 reps. You shouldn’t exercise beyond your comfort zone, especially when lifting heavy weights because you don’t want to permanently damage yourself. So I do a few less reps on that first exercise but pretty much do what is required for the rest. Except for 2 really… one requires me to swing two kettlebells up and down but it is quite difficult when you don’t have the wrist strength so at this point in time I just use one. The other exercise requires me to walk around with the kettlebells above my head. I don’t trust myself so I just use one and walk twice the distance.

At the end of my workout I was still feeling fine so I grabbed the ‘perfect pressups’ and did a few pressups. Of regular I did 4, then 3, 2, 1. And the same of wide and close. SO hard. But worth it.

Just before the workout I had a handful of dried papaya as an energy boost. Just afterwards I had the second half of my smoothie with whey protein.

During the day I hardly ate anything because I didn’t feel hungry at all. I had a mandarin at some point and two Brazil nuts as well.

And finally, dinner was a selection of soups and a salad, as well as some potato and kumara.

This is my recipe for tomato soup.
I had previously washed and frozen a bag full of tomatoes. I find it works really well because if you run the frozen tomatoes under hot or warm water, the skin just slips off.
Chop up an onion finely and saute in hot olive oil in a pot. I generally add garlic to flavor and some  herbs as well. Then put in the tomatoes and add enough water to cover them. Let it simmer for an hour or so and then use a potato masher to break up the tomatoes. Taste and add sauces, salt, garlic, herbs – anything to improve it. For a smoother soup, transfer it to a blender and puree it finely. This soup is really nice with a bit of grated cheese on top!

We even had dessert tonight. I had a dried fig and then some home-made icecream that contains no sugar. I’ll include the recipe sometime!

Tomorrow is a day when I just walk/jog 1-2 miles so I’m quite looking forward to that as I’m sure my muscles will be extra sore.

See ya then!
