What On Earth Is A Feijoa And Why Would I Want It?

by Mckenna on May 20, 2008

Bananas are full of potassium - but sometimes they can get a bit monotonous. We drink milk for calcium, but it can be high in fat - and its not good for lactose intolerants.

So, adopt a new fruit - dun da daaaah… the feijoa.

What is it? Its a fruit from South America - in particular Brazil. A German botanist named it after a Brazilian botanist - Dr Feijo… so it became Feijoa. Its green in colour on the outside, and when you cut it open it has a sort of white flesh - but brownish white. The seeds are in a more jelly like part while the rest is a little firmer.

Its one of my favorite fruits - but it is only in season for short time. Its cultivated all over the world these days - but probably the biggest cultivater is New Zealand. Nearly every backyard has a feijoa tree or two and they fruit in early Autumn.

Feijoa’s are relatively high in potassium and calcium and are a really interesting flavor. They can be added to smoothies, icecream, yoghurt, and if you like it, vodka. I also add it to apple crumbles - it can be stewed - all sorts!

If you can source feijoas, they are a great addition to your diet. I love them and couldn’t live without them.

I’ve been wondering where you are located. All this talk of feijoas and tamarillos leads me to think you might in NZ. If so hi there! I’m in NZ too, not a real kiwi but an imported one :)
