Apples grow in just about every country. Over 55 million tonnes are produced yearly worldwide – with China being the lead cultivar and the US following behind. Apples originated from China – and are also found in East Asian countries like Kazahkstan, Kyrgyzstan etc.
Apples are a staple fruit in so many diets! There is an old saying that goes: ‘An Apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Apples are present in just about every store that you go into. There are hundreds of recipes that include apples – sweet, sour, savory, staple… applesauce, apple pie, apple pudding, apple cider, baked apples with beef – anything goes.
Personally I only like apples in sweet things. I don’t really enjoy applesauce with pork – but give me apple cake any day!
Do Apples Really Keep The Doctor Away?
A fresh apple is a great snack. It trumps a packet of potato chips any day. An apple contains a really good amount of dietary fibre which is great for bowel regulation and reduces cholesterol. In addition to this an apple can reduce the risk of stroke, of type 2 diabetes and cancer. There are many antioxidants present in apples which can help to ward off respiratory diseases and help lungs function properly.
An apple is by no means a cure-all of all these things, it is just a wonderful addition that can be very cheaply added to your diet to aid you in your consumption of adequate nutrients.
An Apple Recipe
One of the best recipes ever invented for apples is the apple pie.
I like to keep my recipes sugar free so here goes!
Pastry:
2 cups flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup water
Mix up the pastry and let it sit for a while. Then roll out and press into a pie dish. Save the scrap pieces for the top of the pie.
Filling:
As many apples as will fit in the pie dish
A handful of raisins
Honey
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Slice the apples thinly and layer on top of the crust. Between each layer, sprinkle some cinnamon, nutmeg and drizzle a very small amount of honey. Keep going until the apples come above the pie dish in a nice mound. Use the remaining pastry/dough to make a lattice pattern over the pie.
Pop the pie into the oven for around 20 mins or more, depending on how brown you like it. Enjoy!
