For most of 2008 I was living and eating the healthiest I’d ever been in my entire life. I was avoiding sugar as much as possible, and stayed clear of wheat for most weekdays. I ended up losing a lot of extra stomach flab.
Then along came my 2 and a half week trip to America. I decided to forget about trying to be healthy and just ate whatever I felt like. Bad mistake!
The problem was not America though, the problem was that I never actually got fully back in to the swing of things when I returned back to New Zealand. I started working out a little bit, but it faded away to nothing. And now, more than 3 months after returning from the States I am no where near where I want to be.
A while ago I was reading a WordPress blog in which Justin Tadlock (the owner of that particular blog) wrote a post on how many bloggers don’t do much more than sit around slouched on their butts all day. This hit me hard because here I am supposed to be blogging on fitness and being healthy and yet I’m not really in a better position than most other bloggers.
I sit around at work all day, walk to the bus stop, get home, have dinner and then do whatever is on that evening, stay up too late and then find I’m too tired in the morning to get round to working out.
The truth is that I’ve got plenty of legitimate excuses to say why I don’t have the time to workout out, but you see, I’ve come to realize that that’s just not the point.
No pain, no gain and 2009 is the time for gain! That is, losing fat, gaining muscle and obtaining six pack abs.

Hi Elliot – I know what you mean about the holiday slide – for me it was travel to Malaysia and Indonesia and I just ate whatever I wanted. Because I’d lost the motivation to keep fit and healthy I didn’t continue on the right path when I got back home – instead I continued eating anything and everything.
I’m also in the progress of getting more active and eating better but I’m way behind you – I’m nowhere near as fit and active. I’m looking forward to some hard work and good results in 2009 ahead of me!

Thanks for your comment Rachel. Getting back to healthy living is not easy at all. One thing that has really helped me is snowballing my progress (http://www.takefit.com/13/the-snowball-effect/). Instead of trying to change everything at once, just take baby steps. A whole lot of small accomplishments will eventually lead to one big accomplishment!
